- i can't eat before 9
- i should just eat at 6 cause it's still hot at 10
- i want to shave my head to release the heat
- i'm considering putting my computer and fridge in the bedroom, aka - the only room with a/c
- i leave the a/c on when i leave the bedroom in the hopes that when i return to the bedroom it will finally be not-hot
- talking about the weather isn't small talk, it's the ONLY talk
- i love going to work and having to turn the heater on under my desk it's so cold in my cube
- i want to stay at work until 9 so i don't have to walk home in the heat, but then i refer to number 2
- my fridge is sweating and oppossed to feeling grossed out or worried by that, i just think, "dude, i so know how you're feeling right now"
- it's too hot to do pilates is not just an excuse, it's really true

it's so hot out...
please tell me it's not me...
also, i had jury duty today. it lasted for 1 hour and 43 minutes. truth be told, i feel kinda jipped. i never even got to tell a proposterous story to a lawyer to get out of it. the defendant settled and all of us got to leave. and while i was treated to a very productive day at work, i somehow feel like i got scammed and scammed the city in the process. ah well. we'll see what happens in 8 years...

this is hard work
it all started when i was a little girl. i learned about batman. i'm not sure how i learned about him, but i did. and i LOVED him. still do. and then i found out about comic books and always wanted them - boys said they had so much fun getting them! - but i didn't know. but lo and behold, there's a comic book shop in hamburg! so my parents took me one day and i went in and had one of the most scarring experiences of my young life. the huge, mean man asked me which batman comic i wanted. there's more than one? yeah - come back when you know what you want. the subtext was, i hate girls. i was sure of it. for christmas that year my parents got me a subscription to batman comics, but it just wasn't the same. i was heartbroken. so while i still loved my dark knight, i survived on movies and animated series, and it kept me going for many years. and when i was 16 my parents bought me nothing but batman toys for christmas - that seriously rocked.
and then, i discovered amazon.com. and TPBS & graphic novels. and credit cards. well, really, i knew about credit cards a long time ago, but you know what i mean. and you know what, this is a freakin' complicated hobby! you would think dc.com would list all of their TPBs on their site, but they don't. and jesus christ, DC is apparently incapable of having a story arc without having it crossover between at least 3 different series. so you buy the TPB, and it's all good, right? NO! you can't survive on TPBs alone, because then when you try to pick up the next story arc there will be things you missed because they didn't make it into a TPB and you're lost. it sucks. so buy just all back issues you say, yeah, good freaking luck. and this infinite crisis thing is gonna kill me. like, what is it all about and why do i have to wait until 9/20 to buy it? and why does batman alone have 3 different story lines and which one is which and how the heck do they fit chronologically?!?!
ahem.
i'm a sane and rational person. all i really want is the whole story. and for nightwing and oracle to get back together. is that truly so much? it's just, ebay is expensive, the comic shop next door closed officially today and i'm scared that the one on elmwood is home to another mean, huge man. "come back when you know what you want, girl."

vacation montage
7/11 - darth died. for those of you who somehow have missed this aspect of my life - i had a giant black angel fish i named darth. he used to have a twin named anakin until he ate him and everything else in the tank. i had him for five years. for one of those years he lived in a bucket in the kitchen sink after the tank broke. he survived a lobster, ick (the disease, not a comment on the lobster) and the cat. i tried to give him a "burial at sea," but alas, his body was too might to fit through the passage way to fishy heaven. so instead i tossed him in the kitchen garbage can and asked johnny to take it out. and then we went and bought more fishies and they're cute and none of them have eaten each other yet. bonus. this day also featured drinking at 1pm and going to see yo la tengo, but that's best summed up here. i keep waiting for the shrimp we bought to clean their eyeballs.
7/12 - i went to the salon and then kicked ass at kickboxing. i got to show off my moves on...
7/13 - perhaps, one of the most fun days. and by days i mean nights. went to 44, and then two lovely ladies and myself tried to find roxy's, but instead got lost, broke a flip-flop, fixed said flip-flop, drunk dialed a husband, and showed up just in time to determine that it is of the utmost necessity that we wear fedoras and become burlesque dancers. but i already knew that. and then, the unthinkable happened. we went to chippewa. we ran into chad (shaun-lite) and i asked him if he was scared of us. he said, "no, i'm one of the most confident people you'll ever meet." eww. and then jess said, and i kid you not, "you're a shitty waitress." did you get that? not wait-er, wait-ress. oh god, hilarity ensued.
7/14 - happy birthday greg and happy independence your crazy, blood thirsty, frogs. i went to babies r us to buy baby shower presents and decided that i can never have kids. i'd spend too much money on crib bedding sets. oh, and "40 year old virgin" is actually a very funny movie.
7/15 - i just tried to go to the comic book store around the corner from me to sell some truly terrible graphic novels. turns out, i hate elseworlds. at least the ones i currently own. and i was thwarted in my attempts, so i put the following letter in their mailbox.
Dear Sir(s),
Today, I attempted to visit your comic book store, and was unsuccessful for the fourth time in a row. As I’m sure you can imagine, this is irksome. Granted, one of the times was due to the presence of a screaming child and I couldn’t bring myself to come in, but the other times were due to you closing early. I look forward to going in your comic book store but never get to. You may not care, but you should. Since I can’t be assured that you will be open, and I am a graphic novel and TPB junkie, I go to Amazon and eBay to get my fix. Big deal, you say? It is. In the last month, I’ve spent $500 on graphic novels and TPBs. This could have all been yours, including some TPBs in NM condition that I’m looking to sell. And I would always prefer to patronize a local business as opposed to a national conglomerate, but hey – at least Amazon and eBay are always open when they say they’ll be.
Sincerely,
Your friendly neighborhood comic junkie
deserving of a post all its own

not that odd for the two of us
why?
cause half your utility belt would be full of alka-seltzer.
screw that - you think batman doesn't use some kind of antacid?
heck, no.
why do you think he's always grimacing?
from all the whiskey?
no - batman has an irritable colon!
what?! (cue uncontrollable laughter)
and when jim gordon is standing by the bat-light going "where is he?" batman's late cause he's trying to squeeze one out before fighting the joker.
(still laughing)
really, gabby, i think you should consider the less serious side of your hero. the time catwoman scratched his face - do you know why? it wasn't cause he wouldn't kiss her!
cause he farted?
damn straight! the bat-vents in his batsuit opened up and the stench was horrible! he'd have to vent or else that costume would explode! did you ever read the underground comic - "the time the bat shat?"
no...
that's cause i just made it up.

Not Just for Kids Anymore
It's like being a kid again, only more idyllic. You're reminded of those lazy afternoons lying in the back yard, with nary a care in the world, except that if the dog drools on the pages one more time you may never find out how exactly your heros were able to defeat the evil villians. And I thank god that I'm still enough of a child to lose myself in those brightly hued pages, wonder how exactly each voice would really sound based on the font and color used, and most importantly wonder how the world would really be if these heros existed. Have you ever chuckled to yourself, cause you know they really do? When I was younger I was convinced my dad was Batman. He could do anything and fix anything and figure anything out. And while I know now he's not, he's far too sane to be, I still cherish the memory of seeing him so. So, I'm feeding my obsession with pure abandon and loving every second of it. And like all obsessed and addicted persons, I urge you to join me. Here's what I have so far, and I'll be sure to post once I get more. Oh yes, there will be more...

having a little sister is a big responsibility. as i'm sure having a little brother is if you're male. she absolutely, 100% adores me and thinks i can do no wrong. and i can, and do, often. but never in her eyes. she even dyes her hair red now, just like me, and our mom did before us.
we don't talk all the time, there's not much for a 17 and 26 year old to talk about, but we're always there for each other - no matter what. and that really means something. apparently she's having some drama with her friends. her friends are full of drama that maddie just doesn't have patience for it. i really admire the fact that she doesn't put up with the drama or cause any of it - god knows i did when i was her age. so she's going to hide out in allentown for the weekend.
dear god, what am i going to do with her for 3 days?! there's only so much time that pilates, shopping and hair dying fill. i can't let her find out that i'm lame! but i guess it's ok. i've told her i'm lame and while she says she doesn't believe it, she promises that from two inches above, she'll still always look up to me.

i've found lately that i'm having trouble keeping track of time. like, i'm sitting on the subway and suddenly i notice it's my stop, which means 15 minutes and 6 stops have gone and i completely just lost that time. and it's not like i just "missed" them. they're the only 15 minutes and 6 stops! and just now, i really thought it was 9:00 as i got home at 8:30, had some cereal and sat down to finish my paper, but instead it's almost 10:00. i'm starting to get scared. not only do i have 4 pages to write and bedtime soon, but i'm also blacking out during the day. i'm going to start drinking heavily(er) so that when this happens i can blame the grey goose and not consider a deeper medical problem. hooray!

indeed. in fact, i've already exhausted all other webpages that i normally frequent and found myself on msn hotmail's "today" page which featured pick up lines girls should use? my favorite: "Don't you think Batman's cooler than Superman because he doesn't have super-powers to fall back on?" Let him be an expert. If a guy is reading something that you know about -- a newspaper story, a novel, or a comic book you remember fondly -- comment on it and let him show you how much he knows.
so, i didn't write my paper at work. and i never really was going to. quite simply, i could never spend my time doing something non-work related while other people are breaking their backs doing work related work. it just wouldn't be right and i would feel crappy. especially when a reader of this blog continually does stuff for me. "yeah, could you get this done from me by 3? i have a few more pages of a paper to write." sure, that has me written all over it. i did take 15 minutes of my lunch though to do some brainstorming. so, that's a good start.
so yeah, i'm off to write a paper. unless i think of more ways to procrastinate first.

this friend and i also share a common love for beer and batman, but i recently learned that there were st. patty's day pics that i didn't get to see, and now i don't know if we're still friends. so what should i do with all of my spare batman beyond dvds? i guess i'll just throw them out and the homeless can use them as coasters.
so, it's 6:54 on sunday and i have a paper due on wednesday. i was stressed about it when i thought it had to be 15 pages, but it really only has to be 8-9, so no big deal. heck, i could write most of it at work. i've discovered an upside to getting a new boss - all projects are on hold until they're reapproved. try to hold your jealousy in, i'll be paying for this period of tranquility soon enough.
so here i am, doing everything but my paper. i blame this on my new year's resolution - "to have more fun." but gabby, you always seemed like you were having a blast. not so, my friend. there was a period of time when i was taking everything way too seriously, and it wasn't cool. so i made a promise on my birthday to just have more fun. and it's working splendidly! of course, it would help if my immune system would play along, but all things considered, i am a much more whimsical and happy go lucky person. but this is to the detriment of my school work. it's just not featuring the "oomph" that it used to. and i'm not caring like i used to. as a schoolmate said to me, 2 years from now, all anyone is going to care about is that you graduated, not what your gpa was. true dat, homes. although, i was thinking it'd be pretty awesome to bump my 3.62 up to a 3.75 and graduate magna cum laude, until i just learned that ub only does that for undergrads. well, there goes that motivation. who wants to play "you don't know jack?"

then, the opposite happened. the furnace turned off and wouldn't go back on. it was 52. with the doors closed. i hated it.
now the ol' clunker is working fine (since it's getting replaced tomorrow) and johnny and i are battling over the thermostat. turns out, j&a's temp setting is really more for me than johnny's 68. so, dear friends of mine, if you want to swap apartments i'm all for it. but if you sleep in my bed don't drool on my pillows. that kinda thing really grosses me out.
p.s. to greg - i'm really sorry about what happened on st. patty's day, especially if you wanted to have kids someday. of course, if you don't want to have them, then you're welcome.

oh, and i'm really sorry about your shoulder, jess. like, really REALLY sorry. not just cause i gave you a boo boo, but cause i fear the retribution.
and just in case you're curious - i did not go to class this morning. i got up and was showered by 8, but it was all downhill after that. no worries - the teacher bought my lame excuse and i still passed. so, who won that bet?
Sunday, March 12, 2006
thursday started normally enough. i got up late, got in the shower late, and then johnny told me his grandfather died. end normal. i called in late to work and then we began the frantic task of finding a same day plane ticket to nyc for less than $500. do you know continental has the nerve to charge $1700? wtf?! and then a very good friend called and offered to drive us to the airport - which was, and still is, most appreciated. so, i got to work, everyone gave their condolences and then before i could thank them asked me where i got my shoes from. again, wtf. i think i played the part well, but quite frankly, i found the entire conversation incredibly crass.
44 followed work. i was still wearing my cute shoes because by that point, i was ready to be told how cute they were - and those comments were appreciated as were the condolences. 2 firsts for me happened at 44 that night - i got my first ever nosebleed - that's right! over 26 years nosebleed free, and i get my first one at a bar. and then i met jim kelly and got his autograph for carrie's brother, who's going to iraq soon. i have to say, mr. kelly was very nice. he told me that it would've been ok for me to ask for his autograph, even if kevin wasn't going to war. and then he hugged me. man oh man, it was wierd. i don't care a lick about football, but i still found the whole thing very cool. and my nose didn't bleed on him, which i consider a bonus.
friday, went to desi's, got drunk, nothing unusual. well, the band was good, and comprised of very attractive 20 year olds, so i guess that is unusual.
saturday we went to peter's house for a good ol' sittin' around the fire night. i love the smell of a fire and going home smelling like a fire. i swear, if i ever commit arson, it'll be because i love the smell. if yankee candle just made a candle that smelled like that instead of "sundried linen, wedded bliss, candy-apple-lemon-merengue-sugar" then i wouldn't have to do it. take note, yankee candle. but i went home, smelling wonderful and slept like the dead. which was great, cause no dead blonde girls in white pinafores with pink bows around the waists came to bother me. hey, maybe she was tired too?
just so you know, don't ever watch the golden bowl becuase it sucks. and don't watch hearts in atlantis if you're missing someone, cause then it's really sad.
and on that note - it's homework and clean laundry time. woo hoo!
